The Quiet Habits That Keep You in the Game

I was reading something recently in a local Texas magazine about Nolan Ryan, and it stuck with me.

Everyone remembers Nolan Ryan for throwing gas and pitching forever. What people forget is why he lasted. It wasn’t hype or talent alone. It was quiet, boring habits. Daily arm care. Conditioning. Recovery. Stuff no one applauded. Stuff that didn’t feel dramatic. But it compounded for decades and kept him in the game while other guys, just as gifted, broke down.

That sent my mind straight to my own life and business.

What are the quiet habits I already have that I could lean into even harder? For example, I know I’m good at responding quickly to emails. That’s a habit that serves me. So the question becomes: is there a system I could build that lets me respond even faster, with less friction, and better outcomes?

On the flip side, what are the quiet habits that might be undermining me? I tend to multitask during calls. Maybe that’s not always wrong. But I’m asking myself: is there a different way to handle that time that would lead to better decisions, better relationships, or cleaner execution?

This isn’t about becoming obsessive or miserable. If you’re OCD about everything, your life is going to suck. That’s not the goal. The goal is something more like being blissfully OCD. Not nitpicking because you hate your life, but asking better questions because you want to get the most out of yourself.

Most people chase big breakthroughs. Very few people quietly refine their habits.

But if you really want to level up, the fastest path usually isn’t a massive change. It’s taking the habits you already have, questioning them honestly, and making them just a little better. Over time, that’s what separates the people who burn out from the people who keep winning.
