One thing that’s been kind of cool for me as I have grown in business, is realizing that I actually do have a moral compass. I have values. I care about doing the right thing. Not because I have to, but because I want to.
I learned hard work from my dad. I learned how to be a decent human being who cares about people from my parents. And now that I have worked hard and seen the benefits of that, it’s been validating to see that those things didn’t disappear when the constraints did.
If you’re earlier in your journey and you feel that you haven’t “made it” yet, I’d ask yourself some hard questions. Are you actually a good and decent person? Do you have a moral North Star? Or are you just behaving well because you have to?
Because here’s the reality. The minute you get money, any fame, any promotion, you’re going to be exposed. If you only did the right thing because you were under pressure, or because you needed approval, or because you didn’t have options, that mask is going to come off fast.
And if you’re a lousy person underneath, money won’t fix that. It’ll turn you into a massive asshole and a shady motherfucker. At that point, your money won’t save you. It’ll just speed up your destruction.
Wealth doesn’t create character.
It reveals it.
