The older I get, the more I realize something.
People who look down on the trades are pretty damn stupid.
My dad worked in HVAC his whole life. And two things about that always struck me.
First, working with your hands actually develops your brain. The idea that blue-collar workers are somehow less intelligent is nonsense. Some of the smartest, most practical thinkers I know work in the trades.
Second, when the job is done… it’s done.
You fix the AC. Done.
You put a roof on. Done.
You remodel the kitchen. Done.
You step back and say, “That’s finished.”
Most of life isn’t like that.
You’re never done raising kids.
You’re never done with your marriage.
You’re never done with your health.
You’re never done with your work.
Even if you build something great, it keeps moving. It keeps demanding attention.
Life is dynamic.
A lot of people struggle with that because they’re waiting for the moment when everything is finally handled and they can relax.
That moment never comes.
You’re not done until your last breath.
So the real skill isn’t finishing everything.
The real skill is waking up and taking another swing.
Day after day.
And if you keep doing that long enough, maybe one day you can look back and say something better than “I finished.”
You can say:
I finished well.
